Lip Enhancement Cosmetic Procedures: Lip Flip and Lip Filler

Non-surgical lip augmentation modifies the shape of your lips to add or restore volume and/or smooth lines. Aesthetic treatments such as a lip flip or lip filler can help you to enhance your natural beauty and achieve your cosmetic goals.

We use two main treatments at our Ferndale medical spa to address areas you’d like to improve the appearance of your lips: the lip flip and lip filler. Each client receives a full face assessment during your initial consultation. This can help you determine which lip enhancement procedure is right for you so you can have plumper, fuller lips. It also will help us identify what other areas need to be treated in order to give you a balanced natural approach if you would like lip augmentation.

Lip Flip

A lip flip is a popular procedure that produces a subtle pout and makes your lips look fuller without increasing the volume. This lip augmentation uses neurotoxin injections, such as Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, or Daxxify™ in precise areas causing the lip to relax and flip outward and upward exposing more of the lip. Injections into the lip area create a fuller, poutier appearance.

With a lip flip, you will have the appearance of natural, fuller lips. We may also recommend combining a lip flip with lip injections for fuller enhancement depending on your natural lip shape.

A lip flip procedure will typically last (4-6 weeks) and the treatment takes less than 5 minutes (appointment time is usually 15 minutes).

Lip Filler

Hyaluronic acid (HA) based injectable fillers are used to achieve lip volume, enhance lip shape, and smooth vertical lip lines. These lip injectables will stretch and move with your skin giving you fuller, plumper lips as you speak and make facial expressions.

Side effects are typically mild and include temporary bruising, swelling or redness at the injection site. Swelling resolves within 3-4 days and bruising resolves within a week. Lips may feel tender for up to two weeks after the initial lip injection.

Give this type of filler about 2 weeks before assessing results as it may feel lumpy at first, and firm for the first few days, but will soften as it settles and feel softer. If you are prone to bruising, ask about our signature anti-bruising protocol at your appointment!

Risks of Dermal Fillers

The biggest risk of any filler is a vascular occlusion. Although this is extremely rare, if you are getting dermal fillers you should know every risk. This occurs when the filler is placed into a blood vessel and blocks blood flow to your skin. If this occurs usually the area will turn white immediately and you will experience pain different than a poke. We keep a dissolving agent on hand at all times and will initiate the protocol if ever needed.

If you notice blanching, pain you cannot ignore or abnormal swelling once you go home, you need to contact us immediately. Although this is an extremely low risk, you should always be aware of all risks with any procedure you are receiving.

Lip dermal fillers will last between 6-12 months depending on how quickly your body metabolizes the filler. Filler treatments typically take about 45 minutes.

Before Your Lip Augmentation Treatment

We typically recommend avoiding large amounts of alcohol 72 hours before, caffeine day of and any NSAIDS/Blood thinners 1 week prior to your treatment to minimize bleeding/bruising. Please consult your physician before stopping any prescription medications.

There is a higher chance of bruising with dermal filler treatments than with Botox, so some clients may take arnica tablets 4-7 days prior to their treatment but it is not necessary. Arnica is an over-the-counter homeopathic medication which helps prevent bruising, found in most pharmacies.

After Your Lip Enhancement Procedure

There is usually no downtime for lip enhancement treatment, but you may experience some swelling and bruising.

Please DO NOT massage or manipulate the area treated as this may alter your results. This is especially important in the first 6 hours following treatment as that is when the filler is most malleable.

Please drink LOTS of water. Hyaluronic acid fillers work by absorbing water so the more you drink, the more beautiful your results.

If you are experiencing swelling, you may ice the area for 10 minutes at a time. Please be sure to take a 10 minute break between ice applications as it is easy to give yourself frostbite if the ice pack is left on for too long.

We recommend you do not exercise for 24-48 hours as this will increase swelling.

Keep in mind some treatments may have different aftercare instructions so these may not all apply to your specific service. We will go over everything at your appointment that applies.

Periodic treatments are required to maintain results and we will recommend an appropriate treatment plan based on multiple factors that are unique to you.
